· 1930's Style Thrifted Coat ·

I'm constantly on the look-out for great deals on furs at antique stores, so when I came across this coat last spring, I fell in love with it purely for the fur collar.  It is super soft and fluffy, and I was intending to take it off the coat and use it elsewhere.  However, the coat was such a great fit that I'm keeping the collar in its original condition for the foreseeable future. :-)

The coat was originally almost knee-length and the sleeves were sans cuffs.  However, the sleeves were too short on me, and I really needed a coat that could also accommodate my full 50s skirts, too.  So, off went 8" of length and on went cuffs!  I feel like the shorter length also helps give a 30s vibe to the coat- which is always a good thing!

The buttons were originally dark grey, but not being a big grey fan, I replaced them with mother-of-pearl buttons. :-)  I ended up taking in the waist a bit and removing some strange metal decorations that were originally on the "waistband".

Overall, just small tweaks but the coat now feels entirely "me". :-)

  1. I love love LOVE this coat! The way you added the cuffs and shortened the length reminded me of a vintage coat that I had that went under the same procedure. Vintage fur holds a special place in my heart. I just love your blog!

  2. Oh I just love it! That color is such a pretty color, too, and complements your skin tone. If you ever feel the need to get rid of the coat, I would be happy to take it off your hands! ;)

On a somewhat different, but related note: how do you keep your beret on? I bought one a few years back, and it refused to stay on my head!

    1. Thanks, Cheri! I think you'll have to talk to my sister about getting my hand-me-downs... ;-) She's rather jealous of it, and loves to "share" it with me. :-)

Hatpins are our best friends! I actually have taken to just using corsage pins now, as they're not so long that they stick off my head menacingly. ;-) The close-fitting hairstyle also helps the beret to settle comfortably, but I do like the added reassurance of pins!

  7. Hello! I'm a first-time commenter; I remember "meeting" you on the Sense and Sensibility board some years ago.

I enjoy following your blog and looking at all the lovely things you make. Your work is inspiring to me.

I really like the re-make you did for this coat---everything about it--the vintage-y look, the color, the cuffs, and even the collar. You were really clever with the buttons--it takes some "outside the box" thinking to change out existing buttons (ha, ha!) It helps me to change my thinking when I go into a thrift store and look around for things to re-make.

Enjoy wearing it, and thank you for sharing your idea!

  11. Beautiful! Great job repurposing. Being a petite girl myself I can appreciate having a shorter coat in the wardrobe.
